Returning from health leave is never just about coming back to work. It is about reconnecting with purpose, people and the work that reminds you why you do what you do.
For me, one of the most meaningful parts of my return was becoming involved in the creation of the Apprentice Ready Toolkit, commissioned by the North East Mayoral Strategic Authority.
This project mattered because it was about something I care deeply about - helping people recognise their potential and feel confident taking their next step.
Apprenticeship recruitment can be a daunting first experience of the world of work. For many young people, it is the first time they have to talk about their strengths, showcase their skills and explain why they could be right for an opportunity.
The toolkit was created to make that process clearer, more accessible and less intimidating.
Working alongside the North East Mayoral Strategic Authority, employers, education providers and support organisations, we used a co-design approach to understand the challenges and create something practical that would genuinely support young people.
One of the biggest lessons from the project was that potential is often overlooked. Many young people believe they need extensive experience to succeed, when in reality employers are looking for qualities such as curiosity, reliability, communication and a willingness to learn.
Skills are built everywhere - through education, hobbies, volunteering, sport and life experiences - and recognising those strengths can be a powerful confidence boost.
Being part of this initiative as I returned from health leave was a reminder of the impact meaningful work can have. It reinforced why supporting people, creating opportunities and helping individuals believe in what they can achieve matters so much.
The Apprentice Ready Toolkit is more than a recruitment guide. It is a tool to help young people approach opportunities with greater confidence and help employers create more welcoming, inclusive recruitment experiences.
I’m proud to have contributed to something that supports the future workforce of the North East and grateful to have returned to a project that reflects the values that drive my work every day.
Confidence is built through opportunity - and sometimes returning to what matters most reminds you exactly why that work is important.
Keep watching this space for the official launch of the Apprentice Ready Toolkit. Once launched, you’ll be able to explore the toolkit, read the guidance and access the resources designed to support young people, employers and those helping candidates take their next steps into apprenticeships.
Co-designed with the North East, for the North East.
